Director of Development

Position Summary:

The mission of Geva Theatre Center is to create and produce professional theatre productions, programs, and services of a national standard. Geva now seeks a dynamic development professional with the vision and leadership to further this mission. The ideal candidate will be an articulate and experienced leader who demonstrates a passion for the Geva mission and possesses the ability to set, monitor and achieve philanthropic revenue goals based on an approach which fosters collaboration and donor retention. Candidate must have proven fundraising skills with an ability to write and speak persuasively about the role of philanthropy and its impact on serving the Rochester region with Geva’s particular theatre artistry, education, and community programs. Geva’s artistic director since 1995 has been Mark Cuddy.

The Director of Development is responsible for raising funds to support the various operating, capital, and endowment initiatives of Geva. The Director of Development reports to the Managing Director. The Director of Development oversees a development staff of three F/T positions plus 1 or 2 P/T.

Working closely with members of the Geva Theatre Center Board of Trustees, the Managing Director, other senior staff and the development staff, the Director oversees all fundraising activities to include: setting fundraising goals, maintaining existing and establishing new donor relationships, managing a comprehensive individual and corporate giving program, securing foundation and government grants, supporting the ongoing capital and endowment campaign, and implementing opportunities to improve existing special event fundraising activities.

The Development Director will be responsible for:

  • Working with the Managing Director to develop financial goals and strategies for each giving program, ensuring that fundraising strategies are aligned with the organization’s strategic vision.
  • Providing vision, training where necessary, and leadership to development staff.
  • Directing and supervising an annual giving program that includes individuals and businesses, and promotes donor retention.
  • Designing a donor stewardship program.
  • Directs the activities of Geva trustees and/or events committee chairs to plan events and expand sponsorship participation.
  • In conjunction with the Managing Director, developing initiatives which identify, cultivate, and solicit major gift prospects to include individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Direct the researching, application, and management of grants.
  • Ensuring that donor acknowledgement, gift receipting, and donor recognition are handled in a timely manner and in accord with the highest professional standards.
  • Providing departmental financial reporting.

Qualifications:

  • At least 7-10 years experience in fundraising for not-for-profit organizations
  • Demonstrable success in designing and implementing a variety of fundraising and development programs.
  • Experience should include some, or most, of the following: Annual fund campaigns, donor identification, cultivation and solicitation, grants and foundations, corporate sponsorships, special event fundraising, capital campaigns, internet/e- philanthropy, and other development programs and activities.
  • Knowledge of database management, analysis, and donor management software
  • Ability to initiate and develop relationships with existing and prospective donors.
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets and staff.
  • Experience working with trustees/directors and volunteers.

Compensation: Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience.
