Gem of the Ocean
By August Wilson
Directed by Timothy Douglas

April 3 –29

On the Mainstage

The Story: Set in 1904, at the home of 287 year-old Esther Tyler in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Young Citizen Barlow has heard that Aunt Esther knows how to cleanse souls and his is in desperate need. The old woman conjures a spiritual journey, guiding him to the City of Bones, a symbolic city beneath the Atlantic Ocean that houses the Africans who died during the middle passage: the journey to America where they would be sold as slaves. With the guidance of Aunt Esther, Black Mary and Solly Two Kings (a former Underground Railroad conductor), Citizen learns that only he can save his own soul.

The Experience: A powerful and inspiring tale by one of America’s greatest storytellers. Filled with humor, beauty, sorrow and hope.

The Buzz: Playwright August Wilson created a singular achievement in American theatre. He wrote one play for each decade of the 20th century, chronicling a hundred years of the African American experience. His plays have garnered Pulitzer and Tony Awards.
Gem of the Ocean represents the first decade of his 20th century cycle, as well as the first production in Geva’s five-year project: August Wilson’s American Century, in which we will present a full production plus a staged reading each season, working through the cycle in order. During the 2006-07 season, in addition to our production of Gem, we will present a staged reading of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone (which takes place in 1911).

The Fine Print: Recommended for high school and up.
