Geva Theatre Center was established in 1972 by William Selden and Cynthia Mason Selden. The theatre was originally housed in the Rochester Business Institute building at 168 South Clinton Ave. (now the site of Frontier Corp.), with the first performances being a lunch time series of plays in November 1973. When the RBI building was scheduled to be sold, a permanent home was sought. In 1982, Geva bought and renovated the Naval Armory (built 1868) at the corner of Clinton Avenue and Woodbury Boulevard. Over 150,000 patrons attend Geva Theatre Center each year. Geva's two stages are home to 11 full productions each year. The Elaine P. Wilson Mainstage produces 7 shows each season and holds 552 patrons. The 180-seat Ron & Donna Fielding Nextstage houses a 2-show season as well as Geva's Big Theatre for Little People, Geva Comedy Improv, American Voices New Play Reading Series and Hibernatus Interuptus - A Winter Festival of New Plays. |
